Guidelines For Hiring An English To Spanish Translator

By Marcie Goodman

Spanish is the official language spoken in 21 countries, and it is widely spoken in other countries around the world as well, as either a second or third language. At some point, you may need to hire an English to Spanish translator if you want to reach a Spanish speaking population. In order to get the best possible service, it is essential that you take your time to look around and find the best expert to work on your project. Knowing a few things will help you find the right person for the job.

The level of experience that the professional has is an essential consideration. The longer the person has been doing this kind of work, the better. This is because they will have acquired the necessary skills and expertise to do a good job. Nevertheless, this should not discourage you from hiring someone who is just starting out in the industry. The advantage of working with beginners is that they charge a lot less and may still be able to deliver quality work.

An expert will do their work in a professional manner and be courteous towards you. If their level of customer service is not good, find someone else who has better people skills and works efficiently. The expert should be able to complete the project on time and meet the set requirements. They should also have a defined work process and good communication skills.

Someone who is proficient in both languages is a good bet. This will minimize chances of errors on your project. Go for someone who speaks any of the two languages as a first language and has learned the other language as a second or even third language in a formal setup. If the expert has extensively travelled or lived in a country where one of the languages is spoken, so much the better as they will have a good grasp of the language.

You can opt to deal with a company or with a freelancer. Working with a freelancer is best when you do not have a large amount of work that needs to be done. A freelancer is also a good choice if you have sporadic projects that need to be worked on and you want to establish a connection with the professional. A company gives you the benefit of having many professionals at your disposal at any time.

The size of the project matters. If you have a large project, you are better off hiring a translating company. They have the capacity and resources to handle big projects. If your project is smaller, then you can choose to work with a freelancer. Having a relationship with the person translating your work is essential, especially if you will need their services on a continuous basis.

The cost of the services should be considered. Some professionals charge a fixed rate, while others charge a varying rate, based on the difficulty level and length of the project. Agree with the professional right from the start on how and when you will pay for the project.

In most cases, an English to Spanish translator should be able to provide you with other complementary services, at an additional cost. This includes editing and desktop publishing. If you need extra services, always ask the professional if they are capable of handling it. A professional who is a member of a translating association or has formal education in translation will probably provide you with quality work.
